Historic Centre

Wernigerode has been first mentioned mentioned in documents in 1121. The pretty town with the timber framed houses is situated at the foot of the Brocken and is called Die bunte Stadt am Harz that means "the colourful town in the Harz foothills".
The town also has a long musical tradition. Here you can find the "Landesgymnasium für Musik" with its four choirs, earning the town the name Chorstadt (choir town). One cultural highlight is the Wernigeröder Schlossfestspiele (Wernigeroder Castle Festival). But other kinds of music have made this place their home as well - from Samba to big band. And what other town can claim to have a music based culture youth hostel?
Around the town hall many small shops and restaurants invite you to shop and linger. The picture shows the town hall with the "Wohltäterbrunnen" (Benefactors Well).
You will surely enjoy a trip to the historic centre to the town hall, strolling from the western gate down the western road, passing the carillon (12:05 pm, 3:05 p.m. and 5:05 p.m.)!

Schloss Wernigerode

The castle, a former medieval fortress, now holds various regular and special exhibitions, 3 parks (pleasure garden, zoological garden and terraced garden). Since 1999 it is a cultural monument and part of the project "Gartenträume®" (Garden dreams) of Sachsen-Anhalt.

Miniature Park Wernigerode "Kleiner Harz"

If you want to get to know the Harz on a small scale you should visit the miniature park in Wernigrode. An area of 1,5 ha holds detailed miniatures of many places of interest on a scale of 1:25.

The Harz Steam Train
The Brocken train (a narrow gauge railway) will take you to the highest mountain of the German low mountain range, the Brocken (1142 m). The steam engine crosses the national park Harz on the way to the Brocken several tomes a day. The line from Wernigerode to the Brocken has been opened in 1898. From the Brocken you have an impressive view over the East and West Harz, as the Brocken had been the border between East and West Germany.
You might wish to take your own lunch as the restaurants on the Brocken have a special East German Mitropa-Charme. But the view as well as the journey, that will occasionally take place in traditional HSB-Trains, is unforgettable.
